  2. explorer. He went to Canada in 1666, explored
  3. the upper lakes of the St Lawrence, and in
  4. 1673 with Louis Jolliet (1645-1700), set out
  5. on a voyage down the Mississippi on which
  6. they made the first accurate record of its
  7. course. In 1674 he and two companions camped
  8. near the site of present-day Chicago, making
  9. them the first Europeans to live there.
